The methodical introduction of high strength netting to the prawn trawling industry in Queensland
Project Summary
This project aims to reduce the fuel required to catch prawns by 35% through broad implementation of high strength materials into prawn trawling gear.
Project Objectives
Establish the relative strength of the subject materials in terms of tensile mesh strength, tensile T90 strength, tensile square mesh strength. For each netting material establish the effect of a standardised abrasion exposure on its tensile mesh strength. Compare the engineering and catching performance of “optimal” trawl systems respectively to the netting types under investigation.
Project Status
Ongoing. Two materials tests reports completed to date.
